Chapter 4 - Selecting a Building Site

Before you can design a home you must select a site so the home you design will work with the site.

Choosing a building site is not only one of the most important steps but also one that may be the most difficult.

Location Factor:
Location is far and above the top factor when selecting a lot.

  • Is the site close to work, shopping, worship centers, medical facilities, friends, schools, and family?

  • Is the property in or near a flood zone?
    1. Much investigation and analysis must be conducted to insure no adverse effects from water!
    2. Visit the site during a rainstorm and observe conditions.
    3. In addition, visit with neighbors and the public works department of the city as to current conditions during and after rainstorms!
    4. Check with the city as to current conditions during and after rainstorms!
    5. Check with the city for any upcoming public works proposals or request for funding to improve or change storm water runoff on your street.
    6. For sites, in new subdivisions, obtain the storm water plan from the developer.
